The new owners of this home in northeast Portland were very happy with their purchase with only a few exceptions, the biggest being the staircase. The existing straight-run staircase from the attic bedrooms down to the living room was so steep that ascending them was a real workout, and descending could almost give one vertigo. Time for a staircase remodel! The contractor on the job asked me to devise an alternative staircase design - one that would be more gentle and graceful. After working through a few possibilities, we finally arrived at what you see as the option that worked best with the constraints we were working with. The builders did a beautiful job with all aspects of building this new staircase.
